Tips for ethnic communities on using registered migration agents

A new translated booklet called Your rights – tips on using a registered migration agent will prove to be a valuable resource to protect migrant communities from unscrupulous operators.

The booklet includes 17 community languages, as well as English. It is available online at the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (Office of the MARA) website (www.mara.gov.au).

In Australia, it is illegal for anyone to give immigration assistance without being a registered migration agent.

“For your protection, make sure your agent is registered with the Office of the MARA – this authority ensures only fit and proper people are registered migration agents,” a departmental spokesman said.

Azaria Nufail - A Graceful Lady (1946-2011)

Acknowledgement: The following article is reproduced in ALMA website with the kind courtesy of "Thorathuru" quarterly magazine published by the Sri Lanka Association of NSW. This article is written by Basil Goonewardena, who had been a close friend of  Br. Nufail & Sis. Azaria since their arrival in Australia back in 1989.

AZARIA NUFAIL - A GRACEFUL LADY (1946-2011)

It is with deep sorrow that we record the death of Azaria Nufail in Colombo after a brief illness, a life well spent and well used ending with a happy death. Thus states Leonardo da Vinci "A well-spent life brings happy sleep, a life well used brings happy death ". Azaria's life and death is a classic example of a happy life and a happy death.

My wife and I first met Azaria and her husband Nufail in January 1989 when they were making arrangements to leave our homeland for Australia to join the University of Newcastle. Both ladies arrived in Sydney in mid-February 1989 and while Azaria had accommodation with full board, my wife and another Sri Lankan lady were not so privileged and had only accommodation and had to prepare their own meals.

Cleanup Australia Day 2011 - ALMA will participate for the 6th consecutive year

ALMA in collaboration with the Auburn Council will participate in the Cleanup Australia Day event for the sixth consecutive year on Sunday 6th March 2011. The premises allocated for ALMA is the Auburn Botanical Garden/Japanese garden and the Ducks river bank area. Everyone is kindly requested to arrive at 9.00 a.m. to pick up bags, gloves etc. that the Auburn Council will provide. All are encouraged to attend.

Unlike last year, the Auburn Council is not organising separate BBQs at cleaning sites. Instead they have one BBQ at the Auburn Park to which we are invited. Therefore ALMA is making preparations to organise our own BBQ at the Auburn Botanical Gardens - public BBQ area. We need to know the number of participants who will be taking part in the Cleanup event to plan the BBQ. Please contact us via email and confirm your participation.

A certicficate will be presented to high school students attending the cleanup event.

ALMA Appeal: For Queensland's & Sri Lanka's flood victims

As you are aware, Floods in Queensland and in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka in the last couple of weeks has brought misery and hardship to hundreds of thousands of people. The death toll is rising and many are missing with grave fears for their lives.

Needless to say it then becomes a responsibility of those who can help to lend a helping hand. As Muslims it is a highly rewarded act towards seeking the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and as fellow citizens it is our responsibility towards our countrymen.
