ALMA Participate in Grand Celebration of 63rd Sri Lanka Independence Day in Sydney

ALMA participated with several other Sri Lankan community organisations in Sydney to support the Sri Lanka Consul General's office to organise the 63rd Sri Lanka Independence day in a grand scale. The celebrations took place at the Roselea Community Centre in Carlingford on Saturday 5 February 2011.

Several ALMA representatives were involved in the event that included Independence Day messages, recognition of high achievers at HSC exams in 2010 and a cultural show.

The event began with the unfurling of the Sri Lankan and Australian flags by Consul General of Sydney Mr. Daya Fernando and ALMA President Mr. Mohamed Fazli. This was followed by singing of the Sri Lankan and Australian National Anthems. Akeedh Razmi with other children representing Sinhala, Tamil, Burgher and Malay communities joined Mr. Daya Fernando and the chief guest, the Sri Lankan acting High Commissioner Miss Sashikala Premawardhana to light the traditional oil lamp.

During the time for religious observances, ALMA secretary Dr. Mohamed Anzar who spoke on behalf of the Sri Lankan Muslim community in Sydney was very well received by the audience. The Independence Day messages From Sri Lankan President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister were read in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages respectively. The Tamil translation was read by Mr. Jafran Anzar. During the cultural show, Afreen Kaleer entertained the crowd with a beautiful song.

Following the event, in a Thank you letter addressed to ALMA president, consul general Mr. Fernando has expressed his gratitude for ALMA's participation and contributions in organising the event. He has also commended the patriotism and unity shown by all religious and ethnic backgrounds of Sri Lankan diaspora in Sydney.
