Australian Federal Police meeting with ALMA
As an initiative of the Community Relations Department of the Australian Federal Police, ALMA executive committee members met AFP representatives to discuss issues of mutual interest and to explore avenues to improve good relations with local community members. This meeting follows from the good relations that the Community Relations Department of the AFP has established with several other communities in Sydney.
AFP deputy manager of the Sydney branch Mr. Terry Venchiarutti and the community liaison team leader Mr. Fady Taha represented the AFP. The meeting lasted for about 2 hours where ALMA representatives explained about ALMA and its activities on Friday 14 May 2010 at the Regents Park Community Hall, Amy street, Regents Park.
It was a very useful meeting where ALMA also presented a good overview of the Sri Lankan Muslim community in Sydney. During the discussions, the AFP highlighted the recent developments with people smuggling and boat people arriving from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan that has dominated the media headlines.
During the discussions, the AFP representatives agreed to participate in one of our general gatherings to share how the AFP has embarked on developing good relations with local community organisations. They also pointed out that their initiatives have helped clarify misconceptions about the AFP especially with minority community groups.
