Joint Statement on Violence against Muslims of Sri Lanka - June 2014

On June 15, 2014, despite several requests by the Muslim community to disallow it, the police granted permission for a rally to be held by the hard-line Buddhist group Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), an outfit which has been classified as a terrorist group by the Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium (TRAC). At this rally in Aluthgama, the General Secretary of the BBS, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, delivered a highly inflammatory hate speech targeting the minority Muslim community. He has been making much publicised hate speeches against Sri Lankan minorities for over a year without any fear of action from the law enforcement agencies in Sri Lanka.

Donations for the victims of recent violence in Sri Lanka

Communal violence broke out in Sri Lanka on 15 June, 2014 in what some media outlets are referring to as the “worst acts of religious violence in decades”. A hardline Buddhist group called “Bodu Bala Sena”, which translates to Buddhist Power Force, led a protest march against the Muslim dominated towns of Aluthgama on Sunday, which then spilled over into Beruwela and Draga Town. The protest erupted in clashes that left at least 100 injured and four killed on the day, 16 houses gunned down and businesses firebombed.

Sadly, It hasn’t ended there and the Muslim population of Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese-dominated South Coast have faced more injuries, deaths curfews and evacuations throughout the week.

We, Austra-Lanka Muslim Association Inc. (ALMA), vehemently condemn these acts and immediately responded by calling an emergency meeting of the community. A resolution was adopted to raise funds and assist the victims to rebuild their livelihood.

We appeal to members of the community and well-wishers to contribute for this worthy cause. These funds will be channelled through a reliable partner to reach the victims.
